Camp season is finally here! We’re just days away from the start of our summer camp on July 5th and getting ready to have a ton of fun with Carver kids for 6 full weeks!

Mary Norelli, Director of Camp Carver, provided us with some insider tips and what campers can expect come their first day of camp!

Do you have any tips for first-time campers?
Get ready to have fun! Some children experience anxiety or nerves before their first day of camp. One of the most important things parents can do for their child is to share positive messages about camp. Talk about all the wonderful activities the camp offers, all the friends your child will make and remind your child about the things he or she was excited about when you first made the decision to attend camp. Another good idea is to try and arrange a get together with another family whose child will be a first-time camper at the same camp so your child sees a familiar face on their first day! Let your child know that at 4pm they’re going to see you or a guardian at Carver Center to pick them up, letting them know what time you’ll be back helps ease the anxiety!

What should parents be putting in their child’s backpacks every day?
Sneakers! We do lots of running around and playing outside, so in order to keep those little toes safe, we’re requiring kids to wear sneakers every day! No sandals or open-toed shoes will be allowed.

We’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors so please apply sunscreen before your child arrives at camp and pack your child a hat so they have shade from the sun and a water bottle!

Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays the children swim or have water activities, so please be sure to pack a towel, swim cap, and bathing suit. On these days only, children can bring flip flops or sandals in their bag to walk from the locker room to the pool.

We recommend that any personal belongings have your child’s name on them so we can return them if found.

What’s happening at Camp Carver this year?
Camp Carver offers a combination of recreation, education, and enrichment. There will be time for silent reading and writing activities, and we’ll end each day with a read aloud. Reading during camp will help the children retain their reading comprehension so that they don’t lose reading skills between June and September. Recreation and arts and crafts will also be a big portion of our camp!

We’ll be taking two trips this year, we’ll be seeing Despicable Me 3 in theaters, and going to Quassy Amusement Park!

What’s a typical day like?
A typical day will vary by group. Kids are offered breakfasts in the cafeteria at 8am then head up to gym for their mindful minute at 8:30am. After that, they go off to their classroom with their counselors. Each group has their own individual schedule where they rotate throughout a set of weekly activities which include going to the park, playground, gymnasium, arts and crafts, recreation, reading, swimming and water activities.

We’ll also have theme weeks where campers will be exploring the chosen theme throughout the week!
Week 1: Magic of Carver
Week 2: Science and Nature
Week 3: Sports
Week 4: Music
Week 5: Dance
Week 6: Theatre

How can people get involved with Carver outside of camp?

Carver Center is always looking to collaborate with other like-minded businesses and organizations who aim to strengthen the communities which we serve. Carver is proud of our deep roots in the community and we owe a lot to our partners, who end up becoming our friends! For example, we’re collaborating with Kids Talez, Rye Country Day Ford Foundation Community Partners and PlaySmart to offer our campers a wide range of activities!

We encourage local businesses to reach out to us and discuss any ideas you may have!

Anything else we should know?
Our Counselors are really looking forward to spending the 6 weeks with the campers. We learn as much from them as they do from us! Happy camping!
